Who We Are

Smoke Free Indy is a coalition of state and local public health organizations, community based organizations, physicians, businesses, schools, the faith community, and Marion County residents dedicated to reducing secondhand smoke, tobacco usage and tobacco initiation through education, prevention and advocacy.
Some of the Coalition’s Major Accomplishments in 2007
- The coalition celebrated the one-year implementation anniversary of the Indianapolis smoke free air law. We will continue to educate the community about the effects of secondhand smoke on those exposed in the workplace and at home and the importance of comprehensive smoke free air laws.
- A $.44 cigarette tax increase was passed and implemented at the state level. It is expected that 23,400 smokers will quit as a result of this action and 7,100 smoking-affected births will be avoided over the next five years.
- Organizations within the Cessation Subcommittee provided quit smoking services to approximately 600 people in Marion County through 118 quit smoking classes and 876 individual counseling sessions.
- The Indiana Quit Line (1-800-Quit-Now) assisted over 600 Marion County residents who wanted to quit smoking.
- Smoke Free Indy sponsored an indoor air monitoring study pre- and post - implementation of the Indianapolis smoke free air law. The study showed that indoor air in Indianapolis restaurants improved 85 percent after the law went into effect.
- The coalition participated in many events such as the Shamrock Walk, the Cinco De Mayo Festival, the Circle City Classic Parade and the Indiana Black Expo Summer Celebration. The coalition also hosted events around Kick Butts Day, World No Tobacco Day and the Great American Smokeout.
