Are you ready to quit?

Are you really ready to stop smoking*? To find out, pick the statement below that best describes how you feel right now about quitting.

a) I smoke and I am not sure I want to quit.

b) I smoke and I plan to quit in the next 30 days.

Congratulations–you’re ready to quit smoking!

To prepare, you should:

  • Find a support person.
  • Start thinking about a quit date.
  • Try to reduce your smoking. If you smoke over 1 ½ packs per day, cut down your smoking to no more than 1 pack per day. Pay attention to when and why you smoke.
  • Think about using stop-smoking medicines. Your doctor or stop smoking counselor can help you with questions about these. Be cautious when choosing stop smoking products. Some products on the market have little or no evidence proving they work. Some are even dangerous. Click on the ‘Stop Smoking Medications’ page for more information about recommended products.
  • Attend a stop smoking class or see a stop smoking counselor. There are many resources for help. Click here to find out about these.

*Note: Examples refer to smoking; however, this information applies to smokeless tobacco as well.
