Public Policy

The Public Policy committee exists to work with policymakers and other opinion leaders to enact legislation that supports the mission of Smoke Free Indy. Key areas of interest include local smoke free air policy and protection of local control, funding comprehensive tobacco prevention and cessation programs, and increasing and maintaining the state’s tobacco tax.

In working to achieve these policy goals, the committee will recommend next steps to policymakers, offer strategies for educating opinion leaders about the key areas of interest, monitor positions, and represent the coalition regarding matters of policy and legislation.

Smoke Free Indy Supporter Testimony:
“My husband and I met some friends at a bar over the weekend and the moment I walked in I started sneezing, my nose started running and I got a headache.   I had to leave after 30 minutes because 5 out of the 100 people were smoking and contaminating the air.   Now I am heavily medicated and struggling to get over a sinus infection.  I feel sorry for all the workers who had to stay in that place all night!  People are crazy thinking it is OK to impose on my right to breathe clean air by smoking.  I have always been committed to this issue, but because of that night I have rededicated myself to making Indianapolis completely smoke free!”
